Making a living as an artist.

Artists need space to work. Little Majestic is the business address for many of the studio artists. Their studio is not only a workspace but also a place to meet clients & contractors – to discuss contracts, designs, commissions, bespoke fittings, viewings of their stock room.

Many Little Majestic artists skill share and subcontract other artists to work on large scale projects

Studio artists tend stay but over the last 11 years, Little Majestic [& its precursor Mess With It] have provided studio space to over 60 artists & makers; hosted 40 creative events; facilitated over 250 creative subcontractors; and hosted over 200 exhibiting and performing artists and paid artist fees to 100.

Keeping creative spaces in Marrickville

With inflated property values and owner’s high rent expectations, opportunities for affordable premises for artists are dwindling.

There is little security for lease holders. What should be binding lease agreements mean little with Owners/ Agents, driven by escalating property market values, using loopholes to break existing lease terms “to cash in or get a better deal”.

The survival of Inner west Creative artist spaces rests on the shoulders of individual risk-taking artists who rely on good will & sharing the financial burden with other artists.

To maintain the security of affordable spaces for artists, there is a need for supportive property owners who value the significance of shared collective spaces for artists and recognise these sites as power houses of cultural engagement and expansion.

Perfect Match

In 2021, Inner West Council invited Little Majestic to participate in their street art program which has produced over 170 site specific contemporary art works in public spaces.“Unzipping Creative Spaces” by Camilla Lawson and Andrea Davies, reflects the eclectic business district of Sydney Street; printers, glass, metal and clothing manufacturing, bakeries, smash repairs, health clinics, and creative artist spaces. The mural engages a sense of togetherness and brings colour and vibrancy into the streetscape.
